Sophia Kapos Drossos
1931~2022
Holladay, UT-Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Sophia Kapos Drossos, left us on Aug. 30, 2022. She was born October 15, 1931 to Tasia and Pete Kapos in Farmington, Utah and spent her youth on the family’s Kaysville farm.
As the oldest child of Greek immigrants, Sophia was given much responsibility and learned the value of hard work, a trait that she carried with her throughout her life. After graduating from Davis High School, she attended two years at Weber State University transferring to the University of Utah where she completed her degree in elementary education. She taught in the public school system for 28 years, the majority of those years in the Jordan School District.
She met Bill Drossos and they were married in June 1956 and were the parents of three children. Their family enjoyed taking trips and fishing at Flaming Gorge. In their later years Sophia and Bill enjoyed playing cards and traveling all over the world with various groups of friends.
Education was very important to Sophia and after retiring she spent another 10 years volunteering her time at local elementary schools and at St. Sophia School. She was also part of many educational societies including DKG, ACE, PTA and many others. She even taught United States citizenship classes. She continued many of the friendships made there well into retirement.
Sophia was an artist and a lover of crafts. In retirement, she became an accomplished painter and shared her work with others.
While Sophia made friends everywhere she went, she always put family first. She encouraged and helped all her children and grandchildren to succeed and do their best. She cared for her elderly parents in their later years and served as a godmother to dozens of children. She was the glue that kept our family together.
She was a gracious hostess and an excellent cook and made a point to add that special touch whether it was with a delicious plate of Greek cookies or a thoughtful gift. She loved her Greek Orthodox faith and her Greek heritage. She sang in the church choir and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She served as a Philoptochos Board Member, a member of the Panahaikos Society, Arcadian Society, A Daughter of Penelope and was a Greek Festival chair. Sophia and Bill were trustees of the Hellenic Cultural Association, helping to launch the Greek historical organization and set up a museum that showcased Utah’s Greek history.
Sophia is survived by her husband Bill Drossos, children Connie (George) Cayias, Tikey (Effey) Drossos, and Perry (Martha) Drossos. Their grandchildren Thomas (Alexandra), Jamie, Artemis, Vasileos, Anna, and Alexandra.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Tasia Kapos, and brothers, Nick Kapos and John Kapos.
The family would like to thank those who cared for her in her last years.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022 at 11:30 am, Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church 5335 S. Highland Drive, Holladay. A viewing will precede at 10 am Interment will be at Memorial Estates, Redwood, 6500 So. Redwood Road.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, or the Hellenic Cultural Association. May her memory be eternal. Kalo parathiso.
