Springville rolls past Provo 12-2 in Division C boys lacrosse first round | Other High School Sports

For a first year lacrosse program, every major piece is a milestone.

Springville with starting number 15 drove past Provo 12-2 with seven goals from the fast older attacker Karsen Norman in the first round of the boys’ lacrosse division C tournament on Saturday.

While the Utah High School Activities Association approved lacrosse last season, Springville wasn’t approved to start its program. In fact, head coach Jared Ottley’s son Cameron and daughter Olivia moved to Timpview to play – and saw their season cut short by the pandemic.

This season the Ottleys are back together, including new goalkeeper Sawyer.

“They came back this year to do this thing,” said Jared Ottley.

Ottley has coached lacrosse in southern Utah County for nine years, and some of his seniors – Cameron Ottley, Zac Mitchell, and Jackson Rapier, among others – were the first athletes he coached in his youth.

“I’ve trained almost every player in the Nebo School District who plays lacrosse,” said Ottley. “It’s great to see when we play Maple Mountain, Spanish Fork or Salem Hills to have that relationship with these kids.”

Ottley jokingly reminded his players after the game that they will be the first Springville Boys’ lacrosse team to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Yes, they’re the only Springville team competing for a season, but every milestone matters.

“Right now one of our big things is to get people interested,” he said. “We take kids out and we look forward to playing lacrosse. We have kids who show up and say, “I’m going out for this sport next year.” For us, some of the other milestones are when the new kids get their first support or goal, or when they go out and make a big move. We celebrate it as much as we celebrate a victory. “

Norman has been the focus of the offensive this season. His seven goals on Saturday give him 47 this season.

“It was great to get to know the guys,” he said. “We got a lot better over the course of the season and we are much better than at the beginning. It’s really exciting to win a playoff game. It feels like an accomplishment. We did that for Springville first. I am very proud of my teammates. “

The Red Devils took an early 2-0 lead, then Norman turned to a defender for a goal and a 3-0 advantage. Rapier scored a goal and Springville led 4-0 after the first half.

The second period belonged to the goalkeepers. Sawyer Ottley and Provos Lucas Becerra both dismissed multiple shots with good stickwork, and half-time ended 4-0 with Springville on top.

Norman scored three goals in the third half and his third goal was a beauty. Norman stole a Provo pass and sprinted into the gate area. He faked a pass that fired a shot to give Springville a 7-1 advantage.

“Karsen can think quickly on his feet,” said Jared Ottley. “I think its size is an asset. The teams underestimate a small child, but it can move around people. “

Cameron Ollerton added a late goal for an 8-1 Red Devil lead. Norman scored three more goals in the fourth half, along with a goal from Brighton Platt for the final 12-2 lead.

“We look very good there today,” said Norman. “Some of them, I wish we could have bonded better, but we did what we could. Catching and surrendering is the greatest key. We have to be able to move the ball quickly. It’s definitely a plus when I’m on the smaller side and can move around the defenders. “

Jayson Molina and West Moyes scored goals for Provo (2-13).

Springville (6-10) will travel to Bear River (7-9) # 2 for a Division C second round playoff game next Wednesday.

“For some people the expectation against Bear River is that we can’t get the same caliber as what they have,” said Jared Ottley. “But if we get more of what we played in the second half today, we can make it a competitive game.”
