OGDEN, Utah – A popular Ogden shopkeeper was shot dead late Sunday in an argument with an unknown suspect.
Police confirm that 65-year-old Satnam Singh was found at the Super Grocery supermarket at 675 N. Monroe Blvd. was killed. what he owned.
“He was really a pillar of this church,” said Kate Hambric, who lives next to the supermarket. “It really was. So many people knew him.”
Hambric has known Singh since she first moved to the area almost 20 years ago. She says he took the time to get to know everyone in the neighborhood.
“He knew my husband and even after my husband died and I went in he kept asking me, ‘How are you?'” Hambric added with a tear in his eye. “”[He’d] Tell me how much my husband meant to him and ‘he was a nice man’ and he always asked me about my granddaughter when she lived with us. “
An investigation says the gunman entered the shop and spoke briefly to Singh before shooting the owner. Singh later died of his injuries.
Police later released surveillance footage showing the suspect:
The suspect appears to be 16-25 years old, according to the OPD. They wore a blue surgical mask, black gloves, a gray Oakland Raiders hoodie, black sweatpants with white lettering on the left leg, and dark shoes.
The suspect fled the scene and has yet to be arrested. The police have no motive for the shooting and ask anyone who recognizes the suspect to contact the detectives at 801-629-8228.
“If you are watching the suspect, please do not contact us and dial 911,” the department warned.
Those who knew Singh and shopped in his store came by all day to pay tribute. Flowers could be seen on one of the store’s doors and there was a candlelight vigil outside the store on Monday evening.
“It’s going to be heartbreaking, you know? Because everyone went to this place,” said area-resident Bonnie Adams. “It didn’t matter what time of day it was, it would stay open late and open early in the morning, you know? It’s going to be tough.”
