Thousands lose power as snow hits Wasatch Front

SALT LAKE CITY – Thousands of homes and businesses lost power on Tuesday night when a new winter storm hit the Wasatch Front.

Rocky Mountain Power reported 12,577 customers with no power at 10:00 p.m. – more than double the 5,863 reported around 9:45 p.m.

More than 214 different outages have been reported, mostly between Cache Valley and the Salt Lake area – although about 100 in Cedar City were also without power.

According to the latest update on the RMP website, approximately 750 of the affected customers are in the Cache and Box Elder counties. About 9,200 more are reported in the Ogden and Layton area. Around 2,300 people in the Salt Lake area are without electricity and 250 more are in the Tooele area.

Most of the causes of these failures are still being investigated. Most were reported between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
