Probation officers were trying to contact a probation officer around 11:10 p.m. when they made an emergency call. Vernal Police Department officials and Uintah County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to help.

The person who was taken into custody is a 16-year-old man who is on probation with the state juvenile justice department, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

A previous statement released by Vernal PD said the officers “encountered the probation officer who had his hands hidden around his waist. One officer believed the person had a gun. “

When the teenager approached the police officer, a K9 was deployed and shots were fired by the Vernal officer.

No one was hit by the officer’s shots, and the officers involved did not suffer any physical injuries, the sheriff’s office said Friday.

“The teen was hospitalized after being bitten by a K-9 police during the incident. He was then imprisoned in the Split Mountain Youth Prison in Vernal. There is no ongoing threat to the public, ”the press release said.

The entire incident is being investigated by the Utah County Critical Incident Team due to the involvement of Vernal officers and the Uintah County Sheriff’s Deputies.
