SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Board of Higher Education (Board) has appointed Dr. Michael L. Good named Interim President of the University of Utah.

Interim President of the University of Utah, Dr. Michael L. Good

The position of Dr. Good as interim president will take effect in April 2021. And when the search for a permanent president is complete, Dr. Good will return to his current position as CEO of the University of Utah Health, Dean of the University of Utah School, of Medicine, and Senior Vice President of Health Sciences.

“DR. Good is highly qualified and well prepared to take the preliminary role at the University of Utah,” said Nina Barnes, vice chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education, in a statement.

“DR. Good has worked for the past two and a half years to advance the university’s health system, leading both it and the more than 20,000 talented faculties, staff, and students that make up the University of Utah Health.”

The board of directors is confident that through this transition they will see the University of Utah successful. We congratulate Dr. Good for this appointment and are grateful for his commitment to the long-term success of the institution. “

The current president, Ruth V. Watkins, announced last month that she would step down as president of the school in April 2021.

At the time, Watkins said she would accept a position as president of a private company, Strada Impact.

The Utah Board of Higher Education oversees the selection of a new president for public universities in the state. A committee will hold public meetings to brief residents on their progress and to seek input on qualifications and ideal candidates.
