Utah County Republican announces 2022 Senate run to unseat Lee

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A Republican from Utah County has announced that he will run for the US Senate in 2022 to receive a seat currently occupied by GOP US Senator Mike Lee.

Brendan Wright, a Lehi-based area planning manager for Latter-day Saint Church of Jesus Christ, announced his candidacy for the federal office on Saturday while criticizing the leadership in Washington, The Daily Herald reported.

“It really built more and more on me that I was hoping we would see the leadership we need and I just didn’t feel like I was seeing that,” Wright said in an interview on Monday. “We heard a lot of great things on the news and from executives, asking for teamwork, courtesy, respect, collaboration, unity, and I just felt like I had to step up and help share that message.”

Wright has not yet submitted a candidacy but said he wanted to get in touch with voters early on.

In his campaign, he said he wanted to help the country get out of debt, increase productivity in the federal government, protect and protect the environment, and expand industries across the country. He said his campaign and message were not affiliated with or endorsed by his employer.

Wright grew up in Provo and attended Timpview High School and Brigham Young University.

Wright said he was “running for, not against,” and that he had “respect (for) our incumbent senators and all candidates from each party”.

“I really appreciate Senator Lee and his emphasis on the Constitution and his promotion and adherence to that fact, especially the work he has done over the past twelve years,” he said. “I just think that this emphasis on teamwork, leadership and action in these areas is really what we need now.”

Lee has served two terms and has already started the 2022 campaign.
