Utah euthanizes five horses because of EIA; Investigation Continues – Business Solutions for Equine Practitioners

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) was discovered in a group of wild horses that gathered in Uintah County, Utah. The tests are running.

The Utah state veterinarian has confirmed four cases of infectious anemia (EIA) in horses at a Uintah fair and euthanized five horses. Eighteen horses were abandoned. There is an official quarantine and tracking is ongoing.

These horses were collected in Uintah County with a group of wild horses and sold through auction in Uintah County. They were resold to a Kansas buyer a day later in Box Elder County, Utah, resulting in a positive Coggins test.

Two horses (a mare and a foal) were euthanized at the auction. Since the horses came from a feral gang of domestic horses, more horses were rounded up and three foals were confirmed as positive. The foals were euthanized.

There are marks on the horses that went through the auction the same day and they are negative and waiting for a 60 day retest. A trace animal was transported to Colorado and is currently being tested.

The remaining herd is assessed and tested.
