Utah is offering free COVID-19 testing in 12 counties this week

Free COVID-19 testing will be available in 15 locations in a dozen Utah counties this week.

According to the Utah Department of Health, free rapid antigen tests are offered in select locations because of the high rate of positive tests, fewer tests performed, untreated wastewater samples showing the spread of the virus, and other surveillance data.

Anyone over 5 years of age can be tested, including those who have no symptoms. UDOH encourages anyone with even mild COVID-19 symptoms to get tested.

Anyone wanting to get a test should register online for a specific site to avoid delays. However, those who cannot register online can register on the website, according to UDOH. Identification may be required.

The hope is that the rapid antigen tests – which are less sensitive than PCR tests – identify people who are now infectious more quickly and slow the spread of the virus.

Those who test positive on the rapid antigen test, as well as those who test negative but have symptoms, will be referred for a subsequent confirmatory PCR test.
