SALT LAKE CITY – Larry Gardner, 35, of Fort Duchesne is sentenced to 84 months in federal prison after fatally overdosing on a woman in Uintah County.

Larry Gardner was convicted of heroin and methamphetamine distribution, a crime and possession of a firearm. Gardner served 19 months and will serve an additional 65 months.

“This case underlines the tragic consequences of the meth and opioid epidemic, which is far-reaching in our country and here in Utah,” said the responsible special agent Dennis Rice of the FBI in Salt Lake City.

In a plea agreement, Gardner admitted his girlfriend overdose and died after ingesting a lethal amount of heroin and methamphetamine given to her on February 3, 2019.

“The US attorney’s office is focused on prosecuting federal criminal charges against those who distribute illicit narcotics that lead to fatal overdoses,” said acting US attorney Andrea T. Martinez.

The investigation was completed by special agents with the FBI and Deputies from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office. Gardner was indicted by the US Assistant Attorney General of the US Attorney General of Utah.

“We hope today’s ruling will remind the community and drug traffickers that the distribution of dangerous and illegal drugs is not a victimless crime,” Martinez said.

“The FBI and our law enforcement partners are determined to do our part to contain this crisis. If someone dies from your actions and you illegally possess firearms, you will be held accountable, ”said Rice.
