SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Supreme Court has ruled the law creating a near-total ban on abortions will stay on hold for now, something the state has been working to appeal for the last few months.
Planned Parenthood and the ACLU of Utah are suing the state over that law, which would ban all abortions except for a few circumstances. The attorney general’s office had hoped Utah’s highest court would allow the near-total ban on abortions to take effect while the case was sorted out in the courts. However, Utah’s supreme court has now denied that request.
As it stands, abortions will remain legal in Utah until 18 weeks but it doesn’t resolve the trigger law case.
Planned Parenthood of Utah filed its lawsuit against the state in June, shortly after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the United States Supreme Court.
