SYRACUSE – Syracuse is the newest city looking for a fiber optic network to add high-speed internet services to its residents.

UTOPIA Fiber, which is already expanding to West Point and Clearfield, will build the $ 23.5 million network in Syracuse, with work scheduled to begin in early 2022. The aim is to bring the network to all households and businesses in the city.

“Bringing UTOPIA Fiber to Syracuse City is very important for our future growth.” Mayor Mike Gailey said that in a statement. “UTOPIA Fiber offers speed, capacity and reliability and, more importantly, has the track record that helps us succeed.”

Executives in numerous northern Utah cities, including Weber County, are increasingly debating the state of the Internet and fiber in their locations and looking for ways to expand beyond the incumbents. UTOPIA representatives have met with executives in North Ogden, South Ogden, Washington Terrace and West Haven to discuss the company’s offerings, and West Haven is seeking outside suggestions to help build a new network in the city.

Syracuse City Council voted earlier this year to sign a contract with UTOPIA’s sister company, the Utah Infrastructure Agency (UIA), to build the new network. The city will be 17th in the UTOPIA network.

UTOPIA, owned by the communities with networks, operates open access systems, which means that private telecommunications companies that actually provide internet tap into their fiber optics to make the service available to the public. The standard procedure stipulates that the bonding covers the costs for the network construction by the UIA, supported by the respective city in which the system is used. The income of the participants is used to cover the bond costs, so that the cities do not have to pay their own costs.

UTOPIA officials announced last week that the entity’s network in Midvale had been completed. Other completed networks in Northern Utah are in Centerville, Layton and Morgan.
