Weather is looking good for trick-or-treaters — but strong winds and snow are on the way

Some areas could get more than a foot of snow.

The weather is going to be great for trick-or-treaters on Monday, but high winds and snow are headed for Utah this week.

There’s no rain or snow in the forecast for the state on Monday, according to the National Weather Service, and temperatures will be relatively mild. It’ll be in the 50s and 60s across the state — the mid-50s in Salt Lake City and Cedar City; the low 50s in Logan; and the upper 60s in St George.

But things will take a turn on Tuesday — and an even harder turn on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory across much of western Utah, extending into the Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys, from noon until midnight on Tuesday. South winds of 25-35 mph and gusts of more than 55 mph are possible. The winds could damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be “difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” and blowing dust could reduce visibility in some areas.

The advisory includes Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Sandy, Tooele, Grantsville, Wendover, Dugway, Delta, Beaver, Cedar City, and Milford.

And rain, snow and much colder temperatures will follow on Wednesday as a cold front moves through the state. According to the National Weather Service, the mountains will get 6-12 inches of snow, with more possible in some locations. Southwest valleys (not including lower Washington County) could get a trace to 6 inches.

After highs near 60 on Monday and in the mid-60s on Tuesday, Salt Lake City can expect highs in the mid-40s on Wednesday; about 40 on Thursday and Friday; and about 50 on Saturday and Sunday.

Rain is expected to begin after 1 am on Wednesday, and change to a mix of rain and snow after 10 am There’s an 80% chance of rain and snow during the day, and a 90% chance of rain/snow turning to all snow Wednesday night. Accumulations of 1-2 inches are possible.

There’s a 60% chance of more snow on Thursday, mostly before 7 am, with accumulations of less than another inch. And there’s a 30% chance of a bit more snow on Thursday evening, mostly before 7 pm

Expect sunny skies on Friday, but there’s a chance of rain and snow on Saturday, and more rain on Saturday night and Sunday.

Southern Utah will, as usual, be warmer. In St George, expect temperatures in the low 70s on Monday and Tuesday. It’ll drop to the low 60s on Wednesday, with a slight chance of rain. The probability of rain will rise to 60% chance on Wednesday night, with a 40% chance on Thursday, when the high will be near 50. The sun will return for the weekend, as temperatures rise to the mid-50s on Friday, about 60 on Saturday and the mid-60s on Sunday.
