It was a big night for Westlake at the 2021 Wrestling Against Cancer Duals on Tuesday. The Thunder Girls went 3-0 that night while the boys team won both games.

The Westlake Girls are the defending champions, and the Thunder beat the 1A-3A, 5A returnees state champions Maple Mountain, 46-36, 4A returnees Mountain Crest, 48-36, and a combined team from American Fork. North Sevier and Canyon View, 54-30.

Meanwhile, the Westlake youth team beat last year’s 6A runner-up Layton with 39-33 and last year’s 4A runner-up Mountain Crest 33-33 and won by criteria (most falls).

At the head of the Westlake girls were returning national champions Celeste Detoles (£ 125), Lizzie Shunn (145) and Emmy Finlinson (155), all of whom remained undefeated. Detoles earned a major win by pin against Maple Mountain’s Donna Wright, who finished runner-up last season. The Thunder’s Quincy Peterson (135) also contributed three wins.

In one of the best matches of the evening, Keilikki Nau Rarick (235) defeated Nya Seiuli, who was runner-up last year, 3-2. Rarick scored two more wins on the pin to make it 3-0.

On the boys front, Westlake announced that it would be a serious contender in 6A by defeating Layton, who is a perennial trophy winner in the large school division.

The match, which started at £ 120, was a great back-and-forth, but in a bout of the returning State Placers, Westlake’s Tucker Butler (157) scored a 3-2 decision over Andrew Crowther to give the Thunder a 21-10 lead admit . Layton then won four of the next five fights to take a 27-24 lead before the Thunders took another big win when Colton Cook (197) took a 9-7 sudden win over Layton’s Takoa Byrd. Mason Bodell (285) and Korbin Churhran (106) put the finishing touches on the doubles with pins, which gave Westlake the insurmountable lead with 39:27.

In the meeting against Mountain Crest, the fighting started at 106 pounds. Mountain Crest was leading by 33:27. But then Bodell got the pin in the final fight of the match to tie the score at 33. Westlake earned four pins on both Mountain Crest falls and was declared the winner.

The decisive game came in a huge battle between the defending champions for £ 126. The Thunder won a huge 10-4 win by Brayden Robison against Easton Evans of the Mustang.

Layton beat Mountain Crest 32-26 in the other boys dual, held at Westlake.

Westlake co-hosted the event with Provo High School, and the most competitive duel of the night in Provo was the girls’ match between Springville and Mountain View. Like the boys’ duel between Westlake and Mountain Crest, the duel ended in a 36-36 draw. But Springville actually won more fights by pin and earned the victory.

In the duel there was also a match between Mountain View entry Esther Han (175) and Hotaia Valeti from Springville. Han is rated nationally and Valeti, a returning national champion. Han had a third period fall in a match between two of the best female grapplers in 5A.
