WG wrestlers win Field Invite for the fifth time in a row

WOODWARD, Iowa – Apparently, good things can be five.

The Woodward Granger wrestlers made it to the team championship for the fifth year in a row at the Dennis Field Invitational Saturday.

WG led the 10-team event with 204.5 points, followed by Roland-Story with 172 and Martensdale-St. Marys third with 106. SE Warren / Melcher-Dallas finished fourth with 78.5 points, Colfax-Mingo (75.5) fifth and Collins-Maxwell (75) sixth. Des Moines North / Hoover and Saydel were in seventh place with 72 points each, Baxter (63) and Coon Rapids-Bayard (27) were also in action.

Alex Saxton won the 106 pound division for WG with pins in 53, 44 and 47 seconds, respectively, while Jayden Flugge-Smith took the highest honors with 132 pounds with pins in 2 minutes, 44 seconds, 27 ticks and 4:30. Also first was the 120-pounder Holden Heard, who finished all five of his matches with pin wins.

Runner-up points went to Dustin Harney with 160, who ended up 1-1 overall, and James Dorrian with 126, who scored 3-1 with a trio of pins.

Jackson Potter finished 4-1 with three pins and a 7-1 decision to finish second at 170, with Alex Evans second with two pins for the Hawks in the heavyweight division.

Brayden Simons was 3-2 with two pins and won via technical crash to finish third with 152, Kolby Fogarty third with 182 with a 2-2 mark while Dylan Major finished third with 220 with one pin but then lost two of violation standard.

Tjaden Smeltzer finished fourth at 138 with a 2-3 tally that included a pair of pins while Oliver Potter finished fourth at 145 with a 2-2 record.

Team points also collected Bryce Hockenson, who finished fifth with 195 pounds.

Flat share had no participant at 113 pounds.

The next action for WG will be on Tuesday when they join Colfax-Mingo and Perry for a square in Ogden. The Hawks will then return to Ogden on Saturday to compete in the Bulldog tournament.
