What does a dinosaur sound like? The video game music composer, Chance Thomas, in Jessop’s diary

(DOUG JESSOP’S JESSOP’S JOURNAL – ABC4 NEWS – SALZSTADT, UT) Video games have always had a type of Sound to enhance the experience. From the inflection of “pong” (yes, I’m showing my age) to today’s full orchestras, it’s clear that music is an integral part of the video game experience.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chance Thomas on this episode of Jessop’s Diary. Yes, Chance is its real name. You have to watch the story for the origin of his name.

Chance Thomas is not just one prolific music composer For video games, movies, and television shows, he literally wrote “the book” on how to make a living: “Composing Music for Games: The Art, Technology, and the Business of Video Game Music”.

You may know his work and not even realize it. Chance is the guy the music was created for Lord of the Rings Online as well as James Cameron’s Avatar Video games. Yes, these little projects. He even has an Emmy and an Oscar.

I have to admit, a big part of the reason for this interview is my youngest son, who made me listen to music as a kid and guess where it was from, and then he grinned and told me it was from one of them his Video games.

In my opinion, a lot of video games are a form of escape that requires you to have a certain amount “Abolition of Faith.” Chance gave me the perfect example when we were talking about a project he was working on dinosaur to come towards you. The last time I checked there weren’t many microphones around when dinosaurs were walking around in Vernal, Utah. You can see their bones now, but people really don’t know what they sounded like.

What does a dinosaur sound like walking towards you? Chance described how he was in the mountains working on this project and seeing two trees sway apart. He thought; “That would happen if a dinosaur. I imagine this thing is getting closer and closer. Steps, blows, blows. Imagine what it would feel like if my house shook. What if a T-Rex just poked his head through these trees yelling at me? “

You could say that Chase is a method actor. As he put it; “You put yourself in the emotional state that you need to convey to your audience.” He went on to say; “Music flows from emotions and conveys them.”

Think of this as yours personal invitation to see this whole episode of Jessop’s Diary and share it with someone you know likes a good story and maybe even a good video game.

Everyone has a story. I have a strong feeling that “have stories power”. If you’re going through something, someone else probably has it too. The common experiences that we humans have can help each other. That my friend points out that stories “help us understand each other.”

You don’t have to agree with everyone, but in my opinion, if people took more time to learn about others and where they are from, we might find that we have more similarities than differences.
