Women set to have their day in Provo on Saturday | Provo News

In a one-day event on Saturday, Provo Women’s Day will be filled with events and lectures. The day is then rounded off by an after party “Girls Night Out” at the Provo Recreation Center with facials, manicures and much more.

This year’s Women’s Day is themed “Behind the Mask”, an ode to the women behind the pandemic panacea and the hope that things will return to normal one day when masks are no longer needed.

The big calendar of events for the day includes fitness classes, yoga, sponsorship businesses in Provo, cake topping, a bike ride with the bike collective, and a range of lectures.

“There are just a multitude of all-day events sponsored by women who are for women that we encourage women to go to,” said Michelle Kaufusi, Mayor of Provo. “It’s our big spotlight, that’s what it’s about.”

This year’s series of lectures will include conversations with women from across the city and from many walks of life.

Kaufusi said she handpicked the women involved based on the messages they spread and wanted the moderators to speak to different populations and ages.

This event is something special for Kaufusi herself and she is recording it based on her previous experience as an elected civil servant.

“Since we’re just one woman who has had to break through a glass ceiling as Provo’s 46th Mayor and First Mayor, we have to work twice and scratch the way to get where we want to go,” said Kaufusi. “I try to set an example by encouraging them and my whole initiative is to improve the visibility of women. I try to promote their leadership and opportunities in the community. “

Since Provo is a very conservative area, Kaufusi pointed out that many women in the area find it uncomfortable to be out there. She tries to help women do this by providing mentors and support.

She was concerned that both herself and the community needed women, with Women’s Day serving as the day of inspiration for women for women.

“I only encourage women that I am here to support them,” said Kaufusi. “I just bowed my head, go to work and work very hard. I am there on this Women’s Day to keep spreading the message that I need you in the church, you have to have a seat at the table. “

In addition to the lectures, the city is giving away its second Trailblazer Award, which was launched on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the 19th change in 2020.

The award is given to a woman who, according to a press release, illustrates the characteristics of the suffragette sisters. This includes courage, commitment, commitment, energy and passion.

To round off the day full of events, Kaufusi is happy to host a girls’ night at the Provo Recreation Center. Kaufusi is grateful to be able to host the party during the COVID-19 pandemic by following local and state guidelines to make it happen.

Women are pampered with facials, manicures, jewelry making and fancy mocktails. There will be three shifts of women, each an hour and a half, so that a larger number of people can experience the party.

“It’s just a great day for women,” said Kaufusi.
