Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed the Champions League game between AC Milan and Liverpool

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be part of AC Milan’s visit to Anfield Road in the Champions League against Liverpool on Wednesday after he was left at home as a precaution after an Achilles tendon strain.

The Swedish striker made his first appearance since May 9 on Sunday when he scored against Lazio on his return.

Sources reported that ESPN Ibrahimovic would face Liverpool after his late substitute.

The 39-year-old helped Milan return to the Champions League for the first time since 2014 as his goals helped the Rossoneri finish second last season.

Former Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, who missed Sunday’s clash against Lazio despite testing negative for coronavirus after a quarantine period, is in the running for the start. The French international had started Milan’s first two games of the season and scored two goals in the 4-1 win over Cagliari.

Milan have received a tough draw on their return to the most important competition in European football with Atletico Madrid and FC Porto, their other opponents in Group B.

Ibrahimovic was up for his first encounter with Liverpool since his late goal in 2017 saved a 1-1 draw for former Manchester United at Old Trafford.

He has met Liverpool twice in the Champions League – in 2004/05 he was eliminated in the quarter-finals with Juventus and in 2007/08 with Internazionale in the last 16.

This will be Milan’s third meeting with Liverpool, with the previous two encounters in the Champions League finals in 2005 and 2007, with each team winning one.
