Alma Monson Obituary (1940 – 2021) – St. George, UT

Alma DeRay “Buggs” Monson passed away on September 27, 2021 after a brief illness in St. George, Utah. He was the eldest son of A. Dale and Dayle Jensen Monson in Preston, Idaho on November 21, 1940.

On June 1, 1962, he married Neva Victor, who had two sons. Dan (Sandy) and Chad (Vickie, deceased). In November 1971 he married Brenda Beck. Both marriages ended in divorce. He married JoAnn Chambers on November 9, 1984, and they moved to St. George in March 1985, where they built a fabulous life together. His youngest brother Terry (Shelley) called Utah Dixie her home and her parents joined them the following year. His brother Bob (Susan) stayed in Ogden, where the family grew up but was often visited.

Bugsy’s favorite job was a professional golfer. He and Mike Smith taught the first JAG (Junior Association of Golfers) on the South Gate Golf Course. He also directed the first golf tournament for the Huntsman Senior Games. He moved to Dixie College to teach the Elder Hostel and the Sun Deseret Golf Academy.

Golf was his game! He was good at it, especially on the 19th hole. He has made many lifelong friends over the years, some of whom date back to elementary school.

He leaves behind his wife Jo Ann, his puppy Cowboy and their two sons. Dan (Sandy) and Chad. He was so proud of his grandchildren Justin, Brandon (Hailey), Krysten, Sydney and Chase. He also leaves behind his two brothers and their families and his many nieces and nephews. He is also missing from his Ohio family. Dan (Maryann) Chambers, Mike Chambers, Noreen Chambers, Dan Duncan and Don & Judy Pero.

In death he is preceded by his parents, daughter-in-law Vicki, sister-in-law Boni Chambers, Karen Duncan and his in-laws Bob and Ann Chambers.

Instead of flowers, a reminder in Bugg’s name of the JAG Junior Association of Golfers Program City of St. George at 1975 Tonaquint Dr., St. George, Utah 84770.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel on November 6, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
