Aaron Woods signs for St George Illawarra Dragons, news, teams, transfers, Michael Chee Kam signs with Rabbitohs, Ashley Taylor signs with Warriors, contract, Tigers, Titans, future

The Titans have picked up unwanted Eels utility Will Smith on a two-year deal, despite inital reports claiming the move would be a single-year offer.

The 75-cap NRL player with Parramatta and previously Penrith featured 17 times for the Eels in 2021, and is a versatile figure who could fill the gap left by Tyrone Peachey. Peachey found an new home with the Wests Tigers for next season after being shown the door on the Gold Coast.

Titans Coach Justin Holbrook was excited about the versatile player.

“Will is an exciting player that has shown what he can do at NRL level,” Holbrook said.

“He has the talent to cover a number of spots and has shown through his career that he can slot in almost anywhere on-field.

“Will was a big part of the Eels push into finals this year and we’re excited that he will being his skills and experience into our squad for 2022.”

DRAGONS ADD TRIO

The Dragons have added depth to their forward pack with the double signing of front-rower Aaron Woods and back-rower Jack Gosiewski, while have also picked up Tautau Moga to bolster their outside back ranks.

The trio are each on one-year deals.

30 year old Woods has notched 233 NRL games as Wests Tigers captain as well as with the Bulldogs and most recently four seasons with the Sharks, as well as making 17 Tests for Australia and 14 State of Origin caps for the Blues.

Meanwhile, Gosiewski has played 52 first grade games – mostly with the Sea Eagles after debuting for South Sydney in 2016.

“We look forward to the arrival of Aaron and Jack, in addition to other key personnel, ahead of the upcoming season,” general manager of football Ben Haran said.

“They will complement the development of our younger players and add another dimension to our evolving forward pack.”

Moga has largely been restricted to a support role in the Rabbitohs squad, especially following the cancellation of the NSW Cup again last season.

“Tautau hasn’t had the easiest rugby league journey but has shown plenty of resilience and fight to be in a position where he will certainly add value to our squad,” Haran said.

“Tautau’s experiences over the last decade will hold him in good stead as a seasoned member of our outside back ranks.”

In a massive off-season of change at the St George Illawarra club, the trio join Moses Mbye, Francis Molo, Jaydn Su’A, Moses Suli and George Burgess as new arrivals.

SOUTHS SIGN CHEE KAM

South Sydney have signed Samoa international and former Wests Tigers second-rower Michael Chee Kam for the 2022 season.

The utility played eight games for the Tigers in 2021 before he was released at the end of the season.

Chee Kam, 29, has played 94 NRL games, starting his first-grade career at Manly before spending six seasons at Leichhardt.

“Michael is a proven performer at the NRL level over a long period of time so we are looking forward to him joining our squad,” Souths head of football Mark Ellison said.

“He understands what it takes to perform at the NRL level week-in and week-out and he will be a good mentor for a lot of the young forwards we have in our squad.

“He also brings utility value to our team as he can play second row and centre as well as being able to do a job in a few other positions as well.

“He is very strong ball runner, can find a hole in a defensive line, and is a robust defender.”

TAYLOR ON TRAIN AND TRIAL

Meanwhile, the Warriors have signed former Titans playmaker Ashley Taylor to a train and trial contract with an option in the club’s favour for 2022.

It is a stunning fall from grace for Taylor who was on a $1 million a season deal at the Titans that expires in November.

“Experienced Gold Coast playmaker Ash Taylor has been handed the chance of a one-year contract with the Vodafone Warriors after signing a train and trial deal with a club top 30 option for 2022,” the Titans said in a statement.

The 26-year-old Queenslander will join the Vodafone Warriors when they start their 2022 NRL pre-season campaign at their new home base in Redcliffe next month.

Taylor had been without a club after being released by the Titans following 114 appearances for them since 2016.

“Ash has backed himself to recapture his best form with the chance of a one-year contract with us,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“He has some very achievable targets set for him and is looking forward to joining the squad next month.”

Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown is confident Taylor will make the most of his opportunity.

“Ash has had some challenges during his career but we all know what he’s capable of and he also brings plenty of experience,” he said.

“It’s exciting having him onboard and looking to prove himself during the pre-season. He’ll provide a different dynamic and we think the change of club could be just what he needs.”

Taylor ended his Gold Coast career with 16 appearances this season as the club made the finals for just the fourth time and the first since 2016.

Taylor made his NRL debut with Brisbane in 2015 before joining the Titans in 2016, a season which saw him named Dally M rookie of the year.
