Arizona positioned to take cuts in Colorado River Supply

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (AP) – Arizona water officials say they are ready to lose about one-fifth of the water the state receives from the Colorado River in what may be the first mandatory cut.

The federal government recently forecast the first shortage of river water to supply millions of people in the western United States and Mexico.

Arizona is losing more than any other state in the Colorado River Basin.

That’s because Arizona long ago agreed to be the first company to make cuts to fund a canal system to supply water to the state’s major metropolitan areas.

The Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Central Arizona Project are expected to clarify the situation in a public presentation on Thursday.

In southwest Wyoming, the Blacks Fork, Big Sandy, and Green Rivers flow into the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, and from there the Green River flows into the Colorado River in southeastern Utah.
