Cedar, Canyon View split boys-girls hoops doubleheader – St George News

CEDAR CITY – Cedar City’s two high schools kicked off their Christmas vacation Tuesday night with a basketball double-headed ball at Canyon View High School.

The Crosstown rivals shared college competitions, with the Canyon View girls defeating Cedar (31-20) after which the Cedar boys defeating the Falcons 76-51.

In the girls’ category, the Falcons took a 7-2 lead in the first quarter, then stayed 15-10 at halftime. Canyon View extended its lead to nine in the third quarter, then held the Reds in front of a single field goal in the fourth quarter to crown the 31:20 win.

Harlee Nicoll scored a team high of nine points for Canyon View and also got seven rebounds. Maylee Spencer added six points, Erin Robinson and Payton Lister scored five each, and Jaden Johnson handed out five assists.

Braylee Peterson was Cedar’s top scorer with eight points. Both teams are now just .500 in the young season, with Canyon View at 5: 5 overall and Cedar at 4-4.

Then, in the boys’ game, Cedar came out of the gate on fire, scoring a whopping 28 points in the first quarter, with Ty Harrison leading the way with 14 points, including four 3-point points. Zab Santana added eight points, including a pair of Treys, and center Aaron Munson made the remaining six cedar points as the Reds led 28-13 after a quarter.

During the second quarter, Cedar extended his lead to 19 points, 43-24, and then stayed around 20 points or more for most of the second half.

Munson finished with 18 points for Cedar, while Santana added 17 and Harrison 16. Together, the senior trio made up 51 of Cedar’s points, which is exactly the team total for Canyon View.

The Falcons were led by Xavier Kadous and Andrew Barnes, who scored 12 points each.

Cedar improved his record to 5-6 with the win, while Canyon View dropped to 2-7. Canyon View will have three more games next week (December 28-30) when it hosts the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic Invitational. Cedar’s next scheduled game, however, won’t happen until January 5, when the Reds host Pine View in a Region 10 match.

As for the girls’ teams, the Canyon View Lady Falcons have three games scheduled during next week’s Hodson Classic: against Ogden on December 28th, Grantsville on December 29th and Payson on December 30th. Meanwhile, Cedar’s next two games will be a Nothing Region competition in the Delta on December 30th, followed by a Region 10 game at Pine View on January 4th.
