FARMINGTON – After a 72:17 loss to leaders Corner Canyon and a steep 21:17 loss to Bountiful, where the Phoenix knocked out the Redhawks in the second half, Farmington needed an offensive boost as well as a win on Thursday night.

When defense and specialty teams see an 18-point lead, the offensive is doing pretty well.

Kenyon Brown scored two touchdowns, including a 35-yard opening pick six to help Farmington break away from Maple Mountain 42-14 on the way to the Phoenix’s first win of the season by week three of high school -Football to open season.

“Just watch the whole offense, your shoulders, everything fall and relax,” said Farmington coach Daniel Coats, the former BYU tight-end now in his fourth year with the Phoenix. “Then they pursued it. Any offense can take advantage of something like this.”

Brown ended Maple Mountain’s first offensive drive with an interception, then stepped into a wide open field and sprinted 35 yards for pay crap before the Phoenix’s 2-point conversion gave them an 8-0 lead.

After Gavin Jensen’s 30-yard field goal, the Phoenix extended their lead to 18-0 when Charlie Holbrook’s scoop-and-score fumble recovery succeeded near the goal line. And the offense did the rest.

Cannon Toone had a sack in the game to prepare Holbrook’s touchdown draw within 32-14.

“It gives us so much confidence. It makes us feel like there is nothing to lose,” said Farmington running back Boston Reinhold, who scored two touchdowns. “We have great athletes all over the field, great receivers, great line, great running backs. Overall, we are a very good team, very deep. “

In between, the Phoenix offensive began to hum. Reinhold scored his first touchdown on a 1-yard run to take Farmington’s lead to 25-0 before Maple Mountain withdrew an 8-yard touchdown strike from Brogan Miles on Bennie Killpack with 27 seconds to go in the first half .

Prior to this scoring drive, the Phoenix held the Golden Eagles six yards offensive.

Reinhold, a close friend of former Roy and Corner Canyon star (and current USC backup quarterback) Jaxson Dart, added a 4-yard scoring run on Farmington’s first drive of the third quarter, with 8:15 on the Clock remain. Miles moved Maple Mountain (1-2) within 32-14 with an 11-yard stroke to Jaxson Denton with 10:32 in the game.

But Brown put the game away for good with a 20-yard run to freeze the game with 4:28 remaining, and Jensen added a 32-yard field goal to finish the goal with about 90 seconds to go .

Farmington opens Region 1 game on September 3rd at Weber. Maple Mountain is out in Alta before the Region 9 game starts against Provo a week later.

“It’s hard to open against a team like Corner Canyon. It’s that double-edged sword,” said Coats. “But our guys worked for it and they deserved every part of that victory. It’s no accident.

“We have a great week ahead of us and to have this win and this momentum behind us makes me feel good.”
