Dinosaur National Monument will implement level 2 fire restrictions on Friday at 12:01 am and these will remain in effect until further notice due to the heat wave and lack of rain.

The restrictions prohibit:

• Build, maintain, maintain or use a campfire or a charcoal, coal or wood-burning stove, even in a developed recreation area or improved terrain. (Petroleum-powered stoves and lanterns are still allowed.)

• Smoking, except in a closed vehicle.

• Any use of fireworks that is never allowed in Dinosaur National Monument.

Any violation will result in a fine of up to $ 5,000 or a prison sentence of up to six months, or both.

According to the National Park Service, the intent of the Level 2 restrictions is to reduce the number of man-made fires at a time when “critical fire conditions” with abnormal temperatures are lower in northeast Utah and northwest Colorado Humidity and extremely dry fuels.

The 210,000 acre monument stretches from Utah to Colorado. On the Utah side, it is in Uintah County west of Vernal; on the Colorado side, it is in Moffat County north of Dinosaur.
