Man dead in officer-involved shooting in Uintah County

BALLARD, Uintah County — A man is dead after a shootout that involved both Uintah County Sheriff deputies and Bureau of Indian Affairs Police officers.

According to a news release from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at 3:30 am on Friday to a motel in Ballard on the report of a fight. En route, they requested assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Police.

When they arrived on scene, law enforcement found a man in the room where the disturbance was reported. The man produced a firearm and shot at least one round, hitting a Bureau of Indian Affairs Police officer in his ballistic vest.

Multiple officers then returned fire, striking the man multiple times, a news release states.

Medical aid was provided on scene but the man later died at a local hospital. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Police officer was also treated at the hospital and released.

The name of the man killed was not released Friday.
