Obituary for Reta Colunga (1935-2021) – Ogden, UT

Straight Fife Schultz Colunga
Our beloved Reta Jean Fife Schultz Colunga passed away on Sunday, August 8th, 2021 after a long and courageous battle against Alzheimer’s disease.

Reta was born on December 14, 1935 in Ogden, Utah, to Joseph Frederick Fife and Marian Ethel Johansen. Reta has a brother, Don Fife, and three sisters: Zona Bingham, Beth Kenley and Karen King.

Reta enjoyed her early childhood on the family farm in Riverdale, Utah. Her family later moved to Ogden, where they attended Ogden City Schools. Reta married at a young age and graduated from Ogden High School at 18 with two young sons by her side!

Reta married Carlton R. Schultz on July 7, 1952 in Ogden, Utah. They were blessed with four children: Paul, Dale, Margie, and Loren. They later divorced but remained good friends. Reta married Lupe Colunga on August 30, 1980 in Elko, Nevada. She had so much love for everyone in the Schultz and Colunga families.

Reta worked for Farr’s Jewelery as a saleswoman for many years. She had many loyal customers and friends.

Reta was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served faithfully in many callings. Two of her favorite jobs were teaching at Junior Sunday School and serving as the community librarian.

Reta loved everyone and everyone loved her. Her home has always been a warm and welcoming place. She loved visiting people and always offered you something to eat. Her home was beautifully decorated with silk flowers and cute knickknacks, many of which were from her frequent visits to thrift stores. She was always looking for a good bargain that she couldn’t resist! Reta especially loved decorating for Christmas and every room in the house was included.

Reta was always busy helping others. She performed countless services to her family, neighbors, and friends. She has lovingly cared for her husband Lupe for the past twenty years after he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. Reta has brightened so many lives and we will miss her very much.

The family would like to thank the employees of Sunridge Assisted Living & Memory Care and the Atlas Hospice for the friendly and loving care of Reta and Lupe over the past 22 months. We are especially grateful to the Memory Care Unit, where Reta spent her final months.

Reta is preceded in death by her parents, siblings and two children: Paul Schultz and Margie Larsen.

She leaves behind her husband Lupe Colunga and five children: Jack (Kay) Colunga, Tom (Gail) Colunga, Tobias (Colleen) Colunga, Dale (Barbara) Schultz, Loren (Debbie) Schultz and daughter-in-law, Candy Schultz. She also left behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom adored “Grandma Reta”.
