Obituary: Harold Dalvis ‘Dal’ Kendall | Rio Blanco Herald Times

Oct. 8, 1936 ~ Aug. 9, 2021

Harold Dalvis Kendall (Dal) passed away peacefully on August 9, 2021 at home with loved ones. He was born on October 8, 1936 to Harold Ralph and Mary Mirl Karren Kendall.

As a teenager, his father worked in the Gilsonite mines and the family lived at Bonanza Camp. He attended grades 1 through 8 in the two-room elementary school, where he would bring toads or lizards to torture the girls in the class. Dal was very good at memorization, so he usually got the lead role in the school plays. He moved to Vernal, Utah as a teenager to live with grandparents Hugh and Mary Karren, attended Uintah High School, and graduated in 1955. He loved the time he spent with his grandparents, helping them with the dairy cows and farm work. Dal had a great love for all animals. While living with his grandparents, he kept and cared for a wide variety of animals. He surprised his grandma with snakes under the bed and with baby skunks warming in the oven.

After high school, Dal went to the gilsonite mines. On December 27, 1957, after a long engagement of three days, he married Marlene Gurr. This marriage was later celebrated on August 13, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have four children together – Pam, Daleen, Ellen and Greg. In 1961, Dal worked as a lineman for Moon Lake Electric. It was Moon Lake that brought the family to Rangely from Vernal in 1970. Another job Dal held in the 1970s was as a partner at the Frontier Electric Company. He ended his professional career with Moon Lake Electric.

Upon retirement, Dal and Marlene served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Martin’s Cove, Wyoming. While serving there, Dal helped rebuild the fortress that had been there in the 19th century. They made a lot of good friends while serving. Other services she provided for the Church included the addiction recovery program, the canning factory, and temple ministry service in the Temple of Vernal, Utah. Other Church duties for many years included senior secretary and ward clerk.

Dal’s hobbies included gardening, woodworking, braising, camping, hunting, fishing and horse riding in search of wildlife such as deer, elk, fox and bears. For many years he had hunting dogs for birds or raccoons. He loved his family and spent time with them. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Lula Kendall, granddaughter Leslie Hazelbush and great-grandson Jordan Dee Cochrane. Dal leaves behind his wife Marlene, daughter Pam (Mark) Berrett, daughter Daleen (Bob) Hazelbush, daughter Mari Ellen (Bret) Byers and son Greg (Susan) Kendall, sister Betty (Ervin) Smuin and brother Darris (Sherry) Kendall, 12 Grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. A funeral service is only held for the closest relatives.

Funeral ceremonies were held privately.
