Provo Community Church to host National Day of Prayer event | Faith

The United Church of Christ of the Provo Community Congregational is working with the Utah Valley Interfaith Association to hold a devotion on the National Day of Prayer.

The event will take place on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the historic church at 175 N. University Avenue.

“The service is part of a series of National Day of Prayer devotions and activities held on site throughout the day to celebrate prayer, faith, freedom and hope,” said Kena Mathews, spokesperson for the event.

National Day of Prayer is an annual celebration held on the first Thursday of May that invites people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

The evening service will include music and prayer dialogues from noted entertainers David and Nathan Osmond, KSL news anchor Dave McCann, Dave Lewis and the Provo Interfaith Choir, and other interfaith leaders, according to Mathews.

The Church plans to welcome 150-200 interested parishioners to attend the event in person.

Provo Community Church, as it is known locally, was founded 130 years ago in 1891 by members of various religious backgrounds to create a stronger presence in a growing community in the Utah Valley.

The Church is currently raising funds to repair, restore, renovate, and expand the beautiful and historic cornerstone of the parish in order for the church to remain an open and affirmative faith organization and continue as one of the few places for secular congregation meetings in downtown Provo grows. The Utah Valley Interfaith Association (UVIA) includes more than 40 different denominations across the Wasatch Front. The UVIA aims to improve the relationship between different religious groups within the community in the hope of creating a more tolerant environment for all.
