These are the Best Cities for Remote Workers in 2021

According to the “Best Cities for Remote Workers 2021” survey, Provo is the number one city for teleworkers. The infrastructure, facilities and affordability make Provo a travel destination well worth seeing. And as more companies offer full-time remote working, people will look for cities that are cheaper while also having the amenities they need to live comfortably.

Best cities for teleworking in 2021

The data for this index comes from an apartmentlist.com survey of 5,000 working adults in the United States from April 9-10, 2021. In total, the survey includes 230 cities on their list. The top cities scored high on overall satisfaction and prevalence of remote workplaces, affordability of homes, and access to urban and natural amenities.

Here are the top 10 cities for teleworkers.

  1. Provo, UT
  2. Fort Collins, CO
  3. Boise, ID
  4. Raleigh, NC
  5. Tempe, AZ
  6. Austin, TX
  7. Beaverton, OR
  8. Denver, CO
  9. Asheville, NC
  10. Ann Arbor, Michigan

The top city of Provo ranked first overall, but ranked 9th for Friendliness, Remote, 54th for Affordability, 3rd for Natural Amenities, and 110 for Urban Amenities with an overall score of 0.603. Fort Collins follows with a total of .599 and Boise is third with .595.

Most important findings

College cities make up the top two locations on the list and four overall. And the study attributes this to the city’s rich amenities, nightlife, entertainment, and high-quality food scene. And those conveniences also draw tech companies that create hubs.

While the tech hubs offer many opportunities, over time they become less and less affordable as more people move in. These include the rise in rents and property prices. While early movers may have benefited from the low price, when the location becomes popular, it won’t. The study suggests that 7 of the top 10 cities on their list all currently have annual rental growth (YoY) above the national average.

Remote workers and mobility

According to this survey, one in four Americans expects to work partially or fully remotely after the pandemic. And for those with full remote working options, moving to a new city or even another country is a viable alternative. Working remotely full-time makes these employees more mobile.

The survey says remote workers are more likely to plan to move in the next few years. When it comes to the factors influencing their possible move, affordable housing and home ownership are groundbreaking for those surveyed. Other factors include proximity to family members and affordable urban locations. Image: Depositphotos
