US West is preparing for possible first statement on water shortage

CARSON CITY, Nevada (AP) – US water authorities predict that the man-made lakes that store water used throughout the American West will fall to historically low levels and will trigger an official declaration of deficiency for the first time.

The US Bureau of Reclamation released predictions last week that less water from the Colorado River will fill Lake Powell and Lake Mead, leading to cuts in Arizona and Nevada.

By November 2022, Lake Mead agency projects could fall to levels that could jeopardize power generation at the Hoover Dam

The April projections have no binding implications as federal officials use the forecast released in August to make decisions about the allocation of river water.

In southwest Wyoming, the Blacks Fork, Big Sandy, and Green Rivers flow into the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, and from there the Green River flows into the Colorado River in southeastern Utah.
