Police officers serving the Provo area and Brigham Young University will not be assigned to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine.

Provo police were encouraged but did not need to be vaccinated. Provo Police Sgt. Said Nisha King. Utah Valley Hospital has set up times to make it easier for officials to stop by to get the vaccine.

BYU police chief Jeff Long said the BYU administration allows officials to decide for themselves whether to be vaccinated. Some officials have chosen to get the vaccine, but Long said the department kept its decisions private.

“It seems that the whole vaccination issue has a political undertone and no one wants to be labeled,” Long said.

King said the majority of officials chose to vaccinate because of the vaccines’ efficiency and availability.

“We got our vaccines early, so it was definitely worth using them right away,” said King. “We are fortunate to serve a community so ready to work for the well-being of others.”
