VERNAL, Utah – 400 doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to health care workers in the Vernal area. This includes the doses of the vaccine to the Indian Health Service.

Liberty Best, Public Information Officer for the TriCounty Health Department, reported that no major side effects have been reported so far.

While hospitals have vaccinated frontline workers, the health department has turned to private doctors.

Best said their response was good.

“They were all excited because they were working with the public,” Best said. “Doctors have a slightly higher risk of contracting some type of virus.”

Nurses delivering the vaccine and rescue workers are also priority for the TriCounty Health Department.

In the region of around 60,000 inhabitants, more than 2,200 positive COVID-19 tests have been carried out since the beginning of the pandemic. Best said there has been a sharp increase in cases over the past few months.

That’s why she wants as many people as possible in Vernal and the surrounding area to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The vaccine is actually the stepping stone to stop this pandemic and create real herd immunity. The herd immunity induced by vaccines is a way to protect other people and protect yourself, “Best said.

The department plans to have enough of the COVID-19 vaccine for educators in Utah next month.
