As cases drop, Utah continues to offer free COVID-19 testing

The Utah Department of Health is again offering free rapid COVID-19 tests for antigens across the state this week.

According to a press release, new locations are selected every week based on high rates of positivity, less testing, untreated wastewater samples, and other monitoring data.

Everyone is encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing while standing in line. Some locations can be driven through while others are done inside buildings.

Children ages three and up can be tested in these free testing clinics, even if they don’t have symptoms of COVID-19. Anyone with any symptoms, even mild ones, should come and get tested.

Anyone who has come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19 while they were contagious should be quarantined and tested. Wait seven days after the time you’ve been around the infected person to get tested. This allows enough virus to build up in the body for the tests to detect.

The health department notes that rapid antigen tests are less sensitive than PCR tests, which means that PCR tests are better than antigen tests at detecting the virus – especially if a person has low levels of the virus in their body.
