Police say there has been a domestic violence incident between a father and son.

A long break near S. Queenswood Drive and Baringwood Circle in Taylorsville ended shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday night when police arrested a man who had barricaded himself in a house and was shooting at officers.

A large area had been cordoned off with yellow tape and was teeming with police officers, with occasional gunfire piercing the night and the wind blowing tear gas down the street.

The man was barricaded after an incident of domestic violence between father and son, according to police.

Sgt. Melody Cutler said the father was taken to a hospital. She said she did not know who called the police but said the call came in at 4:14 p.m. on Saturday. Police announced on Twitter around 7 p.m. that the subject had shot at SWAT officers.

Cutler said he was taken into custody shortly before 10 p.m. She said he did not surrender willingly but was not injured when he was arrested.

“Our SWAT team is good at what they do,” she said.

Residents nearby said they heard police tell the suspect to come out with his hands up before the gunfire started.

Spencer Kauer, who was watching the scene from outside the yellow police tape, said police spoke long with the subject before hearing any gunfire. He described it as “pop here and pop there” rather than rapid gunfire.

Kauer’s interview with The Salt Lake Tribune was cut short when the air smelled bad and both reporter’s and Kauer’s noses began to burn. A police officer retrieving equipment from a truck confirmed that the police had used tear gas.

More shots began around 8:30 p.m.

Neighbor Ryan Lewis left his house on Saturday night because of the loud noises. He decided to wait for the break with a friend nearby. Lewis returned around 8:30 p.m. to get his dog. He explained to the police that the dog is diabetic and must not miss a meal. The police went with him to get the dog and its food. Lewis said the police were very welcoming and “did a great job” when he and his dog left the scene.
