Alta celebrates Earth day

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – According to National Geographic, the earth is estimated to be 4.54 billion years old, plus or minus about 50 million years, and on April 17, the Alta ski area will celebrate its existence.

Every year the Alta Ski Resort encourages other Utahns to get involved in environmental protection, responsible recreation, and climate change awareness.

According to the resort, the event is focused on the future of the ski industry at Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Earth Day: Calculate Your Carbon Footprint

Those interested in teaming up with Alta’s Earth Day initiative are invited to join one of their five events taking place on Saturday.

The events include:

Snowshoe with a Naturalist and Cottonwood Canyon Foundation

Runs from 1pm to 3pm

Look for animal tracks and learn about the wildlife that has abandoned them while surrounded by some of Utah’s most beautiful mountains.

Bird watching on skis with Tracy Aviary

Runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join Tracy Aviaries seasoned bird watchers on skis this winter in search of our feathered friends calling Alta back home.

Nestbox surveillance on snowshoes with Tracy Aviary

Runs from 1pm to 3pm

Tracy Aviary studies the behavior of birds that nest in holes and hollows in the aspen and evergreen trees of the Alta ski area.

Trees on Skis with Tree Utah

Runs from 1:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

For an hour, learn about the tree species that live in Alta, forest ecology, threats to forest health, Alta and TreeUtah’s ongoing efforts to protect forest health, and what you can do to help. Lone Pine Gear Exchange is donating a tree to be planted through the One Tree Planted organization. Meet at the top of the Sunnyside lift at the times shown.

Free screening with Alta Community Enrichment – The History of Plastics

Runs Thursday April 22nd.

This film traces the destructive lifespan of plastics on three continents and illuminates a global movement that calls for change. Find out where plastics end up when they leave the trash. The history of plastic traces the many stages of plastic manufacturing and the harmful waste they leave behind.

How To Watch: Register in advance using the link below. Attendees will receive a link to stream the movie from Alta Community Enrichment, which is expected to air on April 22nd.

Depending on the resort, you have a week to watch the film as you wish. The link will be sent to the email address you use for RSVP in Eventbrite.

Subtitles will be available.

“During the celebrations of the day, events with our non-profit partners will take place to get into our beautiful mountains and collect some knowledge,” the ski area announced. “Although this year’s event will differ from previous years without an on-snow provider, we still want to connect our community with our environment.”
