SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah Republicans booed Senator Mitt Romney but ultimately turned down a motion to reprimand him for his votes in impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump on Saturday.

The move narrowly failed, 798 to 711, in a vote by delegates to the state GOP, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Romney drew violent boos when he came on the podium earlier in the day.

Davis County delegate, Don Guymon, who drafted the resolution, said Romney’s votes to remove Trump “violate the Constitution and the party.”

“This was a process driven by Democrats who hated Trump,” Guymon said. “Romney’s vote in the first impeachment encouraged the Democrats to continue molesting Trump.”

The proposal, among several platform changes discussed on Saturday, also aimed to commend the other members of the Utah congressional delegation for their support for the former president.

Others warned against supporting the criticism, risking defining the party around Trump rather than the conservative principles that most delegates cherish.

“When it comes to letting Mitt Romney know that we’re unhappy with him, trust me, he knows,” said Emily de Azavedo Brown, Salt Lake County delegate. “Let’s not turn this into a Trump thing or not a Trump thing. Are we a party of principle or a party of a person? “
