Butch Stewart

September 26, 1950 – March 30, 2021

Hugh Carl Butch Stewart died surrounded by loved ones.

He was born on September 26, 1950 in Vernal, Utah, to Calvin W. Stewart and Dorthy Alyene Dugan Stewart.

He married the love of his life, Laurie Ann Pummell, on November 5, 1976, and later celebrated in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 5, 1985.

Butch grew up in Jensen, Utah and loved working on the farm with his grandfather Stewart. He really enjoyed being a farm kid and all that that came with it.

Butch graduated from Uintah High School with the 1968 class. After graduation, he worked in the oil field for the next two years. In 1970 he joined the Marine Corps, where he served as a hydrological aircraft mechanic on the F4 Phantom II for the next four years. During his service, he spent time in California, Hawaii and Japan.

When he returned home from military service, he started working in the oil field again.

Butch met Laurie on December 3rd, 1975 and their love story began, and what a love story it was. You have been blessed with six beautiful children. They made their living in Jensen, Utah, and Butch kept working in the oil field.

He was an active member of 4-H on the Stock Show Committee and also served as President. It was a pillar in those barns and bigger than life. Butch spent many years training youth athletics. He served as president of the youth baseball league in Vernal. They found him often on the baseball fields and on a basketball court. He brought his love of agriculture to each of his children and some of their fondest memories were with dad of the corals.

Butch spent many successful years in the oil field as a consultant and ran several very successful companies. This eventually led her to Grand Junction, Colorado. He loved what he did and he was good at it. Butch and Laurie built their dream home, which Butch loved to spend time with his wonderful grandchildren, whom he loved. He loved playing outside in the pool, playing games and of course teasing and enjoying the time together.

Butch was proud of his family and we all knew how much we were loved.

Butch is survived by his loving wife, Laurie Ann; Kinder, Ali (Jeff) Atwood of Lubbock, TX; Shelbie (Matt) Jackson of Vernal UT; Colt (Ashley) Stewart of Erie, CO; Carly (Chris) Kennedy of Grand Junction; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Butch preceded his parents Calvin and Dorthy Stewart in death; Father and mother-in-law Cecil and Bulia Pummell; Daughters, Amy Johnson and Liberty Stewart; Brother Clay Stewart and brother-in-law Terry Pummell and Bradly Pummell.

Memorial services were held on April 6, 2021 at Western Park in Vernal, Utah. A visit to family and friends took place at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home on Monday and Western Park on Tuesday.
