The Christmas theater season in Utah County brings out some of the best entertainers and popular stories told on stage for the holidays.
Listed below are theater productions and concerts sure to bring out the Christmas spirit, be it past, present or future.
Alpine Community Theater
The theater presents “A Christmas Carol: The Musical” from Dec. 2-12 at the Liahona Theater for the Community, located at 2464 W. 450 South, Pleasant Grove.
Performances are at 7:30 pm, with a bonus 2 pm matinee Dec. 3.
Tickets range from $12-$16 for adults and $10-$14 for seniors (ages 65-plus) and kids (ages 12 and younger). All seats are assigned. Tickets can be purchased online at alpinecommunitytheater.org. Limited seating is available, so be sure to get your tickets early.
The production is directed by Laura Snyder and features some of the community’s best local talent. ACT’s “A Christmas Carol: The Musical” has become a family tradition for many.
Based on the familiar holiday classic by Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol: The Musical” is the Broadway rendition, featuring music by award-winning composer Alan Menken, who created songs for Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and ” The Little Mermaid.”
Covey Center for the Arts
The Covey Center for the Arts in Provo is presenting a number of concerts and plays for the holidays, including the popular “Nutcracker” by the Utah Metropolitan Ballet.
This reimagined holiday favorite premiered in 2017 with sets and costume designs by Cassandra Barney and choreography by Jacqueline Colledge.
All ages will be allowed — but if a seat is required, a ticket is required. Online purchases are limited to 10 tickets per transaction.
Ryan Shupe & the Rubber Band is another Covey tradition.
With the same lighthearted energy that brightens their popular live concerts throughout the year, Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand tailor their acoustic sound to fit their most favorite time of the year — Christmas.
The concert is at 7:30 pm Nov 29. Ticket prices range from $14-$24. Tickets may be purchased online at ryanshupe.com, at coveycenter.org or by calling the Covey Center box office at 801-852-7007, Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm
“A Covey Center Christmas” comes again to Provo and will star storyteller Marvin Payne, singers Dallyn Vail Bayles and Mindy Smoot Robbins, the Utah Valley Symphony and the Lux Choral Society.
Shows are at 7:30 pm Dec. 2-3 Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online at coveycenter.org or by calling the box office.
In the Covey Brinton Blackbox Theater is “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” at 7:30 pm Dec. 8-23.
This American holiday classic comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.
Ages 8 and up allowed with a ticket, but no babies or babes in arms will be allowed.
After over 60 sold-out shows across the country, the Johnson Files are back in Provo for their musical comedy show “An Improvised Christmas.” Comedian Shaun Johnson brings his friends to town, creating fully improvised jokes, musicals and stories. No two shows are the same. And who knows, you might even get called up on stage to be a part of the show.
Shows are at 4 and 7:30 pm Dec. 27-28 Ages 5 and up will be allowed with a ticket.
SCERA Center for the Arts
SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem presents “A Christmas Story: The Musical” at 7:30 pm Dec. 2-17
This musical, which received rave reviews during its Broadway run, is based on the movie classic that runs round-the-clock on television every Christmas. Set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, the musical follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts — an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Rebuffed at every turn with a similar echoing response, Ralphie plots numerous schemes to achieve his desperate desire for the coveted BB gun.
Directed by Kurt Elison, all the iconic scenes from the movie are here: Ralphie’s friend Flick getting his tongue stuck to the flagpole; his brother, Randy, getting dressed in his snowsuit; the bullies, farcus and dill; the leg lamp award; the bunny suit; the Chinese restaurant; christmas dinner; and many others.
Ticket reservations may be made by calling 801-225-ARTS. Adults are $14 and children 3-11 and seniors 65 and older are $12. Group rates of more than 20 are available.
Hale Center Theater Orem
Once again, Hale Center Theater presents a local favorite holiday tradition, “A Christmas Carol.” Dickens’ popular story tells of the cranky curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge and a fateful visit from three ghosts determined to change Scrooge for the better.
“A Christmas Carol” opens Saturday and runs daily through Dec. 23, except Sundays. Seat must be reserved. Some days have limited seating. Visit tickets.haletheater.org for reservations and prices.
