Dr. Dunn Recommends Mask Mandate For Salt Lake Co. Students Under 12

SALT LAKE CITY – Dr. Angela Dunn, executive director of the Salt Lake County Health Department, has announced plans to introduce masking requirements for children under the age of 12 in Salt Lake County schools.

There was a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

“The best way to articulate the gravity of this situation and what I see as the best way forward for Salt Lake County and to keep our children safe and personal learning is to officially tell Mayor Wilson about my intent inform placing a mask order for school children under the age of 12 in Salt Lake County, ”said Dunn.

Under SB 195, the law passed by the Utah Legislature earlier this year, a health department is required to notify senior executives, in this case Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, 24 hours in advance.

Wilson said she received notice from Dunn earlier Tuesday that she would apply for the “Restriction Order” for review.

“I’m here today to announce that I support your decision and that I will not quit this request,” said Wilson.

Dunn’s formal application will be filed on Wednesday afternoon, according to Wilson, meaning the decision will be in the hands of the county council.

It is possible that the council could hold an expedited meeting to deal with this before the end of the week.

The order only applies to indoor settings.

Dunn said she is concerned about the children who are too young to be vaccinated against COVID-19 so she wants to keep them as safe as possible.

“We all have to do everything we can to keep this virus under control,” said Wilson. “I’m worried about school children. I worry that they will stay in school and we know masks will work, but I also worry about the future of our community and we need to get out of COVID-19.
