Former Salt Lake City police officer arrested for part in storming US Capitol on Jan. 6

A former Salt Lake City police officer is alleged to have been involved in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the FBI said on Friday.

Special agents and members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, with the assistance of the Utah Bureau of Investigations, arrested Michael Lee Hardin, 50, from Kaysville.

Hardin has been charged, according to the FBI, with knowingly stepping into or staying in a restricted building or site without legal authority, behaving in a messy and disruptive manner in a restricted building or site, behaving disorderly in a US Capitol, and demonstrating in a US Capitol or having picketed.

He reportedly worked for the Salt Lake City Police Department until 2017, the department confirmed to 2News.

Hardin is one of two Utahns charged with the January 6th siege.

John Earle Sullivan, who has documented storming the Capitol, faces multiple charges, including knowingly entering a restricted building without legitimate authority, violent entry or disorderly conduct for the purposes of the Capitol, and interference with law enforcement.

To date, hundreds of people have been identified and arrested in connection with the siege.
