Four of Weber County’s 15 towns will have new mayors next week in last November’s elections – West Haven, Riverdale, Farr West and Huntsville.

In nine other cities, including Roy, South Ogden and North Ogden, voters stayed with incumbents, while top officials in Ogden and Hooper were not on the ballot in the 2021 election cycle.

West Haven is the largest of the cities to have a new leader. It is also the fastest growing city in Weber County. Rob Vanderwood, the new mayor, said he had already prepared.

“I have proactively met with our city manager, the city council, both new and old members, to find direction for our first 90 days of achievement. We will focus on our future visions and strategic goals for 2022, ”Vanderwood said in an email to the Standard Examiner. He served on West Haven City Council and defeated Sharon Bolos, incumbent mayor, last November.

Braden Mitchell will also move from the City Council to the Mayor’s Office as the new Riverdale Leader. He was the only hopeful mayor, with incumbent Norm Searle deciding against re-election.

Ken Phippen narrowly defeated Lee Dickemore, incumbent mayor of Farr West, and will take the lead there. He had served on Farr West City Council.

In Huntsville, Richard Sorensen will take over as mayor from Jim Truett, who did not want to be re-elected. Sorensen served on the Huntsville City Council.

Voters last November also took part in numerous city council elections across the county, and the winners of those competitions will also be sworn in in office next week. Roy and West Haven will each have two new members on their councilors, along with many other newcomers.

In Ogden, a new addition to the city council, Kenneth Richey, is sworn in while incumbents Bart Blair, Angela Choberka and Marcia White are sworn in on new terms. Mayor Mike Caldwell did not stand for election in the 2021 cycle.

“BUILDING COMMUNITY CAMERADIES”

Back in West Haven, Vanderwood said the quality of service for city dwellers would attract attention. Another focus will be the efforts to keep the city’s employees and to set “incentives”. The most important thing, he said, is to “build the community of the community and the trust and appreciation of all residents who have chosen to live here in our city”.

The rapid population growth in West Haven has been a sensitive issue, specifically how to balance the expansion with the rural flair of the western town of Weber County.

“We want to combine controlled growth, commercial enterprise, and community support for the next five to ten years. We see bright and exciting changes in direction as we stay close to our heritage and our concept of our past merged with the future, ”said Vanderwood.

Mitchell, Phippen and Sorensen did not respond to inquiries from the Standard Auditors about their plans as new mayors.

Acting mayors include Bob Dandoy in Roy, Neal Berube in North Ogden, Russell Porter in South Ogden, Mark Allen in Washington Terrace, Michelle Tait in Harrisville, Leonard Call in Pleasant View, Jon Beesley in Plain City, Scott VanLeeuwen in Marriott- Slaterville and Gordon Cutler in Uintah.
