Gamecocks travel to BYU with College Cup bid on the game

PROVO, Utah – An application for the NCAA Women’s Football College Cup is at stake when South Carolina heads to BYU for an elite eight matchup on Saturday, November 27th. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT / 7:00 p.m. ET. The Gamecocks make their fifth appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals in the last eight seasons. Carolina wants to make her second College Cup appearance (2017).

QUICK NOTE: SC vs BYU

  • South Carolina is one of only two teams (Michigan) not to allow a goal in the NCAA tournament.
  • The Gamecocks won the only clash between the two teams 1-0 in Sweet Sixteen 2016.
  • The teams have three common opponents for the season, Auburn, Missouri and Alabama.
    • The Gamecocks are 3-0 against them, while BYU is 2-1 and Auburn falls.
    • South Carolina defeated Auburn 3-2 while BYU lost 2-1.

Highlights of the 2021 season

  • It is the fifth quarter-final appearance of the Gamecock in the history of the program. It’s the fifth time in eight seasons, coming out every two years since 2014, with consecutive appearances in 2016-17.
  • Goalkeeper Heather Hinz played back-to-back games with five or more saves against Hofstra (7) and Penn State (5). It has been 10 years since a Carolina goalkeeper recorded consecutive games with more than 5 saves. The last Gamecock to do this was Sabrina D’Angelo in Tennessee (5) and Georgia (8) on September 23rd & 25th, 2011.
  • South Carolina made its sixth Sweet Sixteen appearance in program history. It’s the second time in the last three seasons; the fourth time in the last six; and the fifth time in the last eight
  • This marks the sixth straight season that the Gamecocks have advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, which dates back to 2016. They made it into the second round 11 of the last 12 seasons.
  • The Gamecocks have made nine consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. You have done the tournament 14 of the last 15 years. This is her 15th appearance in the history of the program.
  • Lauren Chang ranks 25th in the nation with 10 assists in the season. Ryan Gareis is in 43rd place with nine assists.
  • The Gamecocks lead the SEC in the fewest fouls per game and rank 37th nationwide.
  • Against Ole Miss, Lauren Chang became the leader of the program in career matches played at 96. She currently finished 6th with 105.
  • A program record, seven players were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District Team; Catherine Barry, Samantha Chang, Lauren Chang, Sarah Eskew, Ryan Gareis, Jyllissa Harris and Heather Hinz.
  • Jyllissa Harris was named to the All-SEC First Team. She is the eighth player in program history to receive multiple awards for the first team.
  • Claire Griffiths has been appointed to the SEC Community Service Team.
  • Payton Patrick was named SEC Freshman of the Week on October 25th.
  • Catherine Barry scored the fifth fastest goal in program history with 1:02 in a game against Alabama on October 24th.
  • Ryan Gareis was named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on October 4th.
  • Jyllissa Harris was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on September 27.
  • The Gamecocks have used a deep bank this season. At least 20 players earned minutes in the first seven games of the season. They have used at least 20 players in 11 of the 21 games this season.
  • At the beginning of this season against Charlotte, Luciana Zullo scored her first goal of the season after 46 seconds. This is the second fastest goal in the history of the program.
  • South Carolina was chosen by the league’s coaches to finish third in the SEC’s 2021 regular season. The Gamecocks haven’t finished a season below third in the SEC since 2015.
  • Five Gamecocks have been added to the SEC’s preseason soccer watchlist – Catherine Barry, Lauren Chang, Samantha Chang, Ryan Gareis, and Jyllissa Harris.
  • Head coach Shelley Smith returns 21 of last season’s 26 letter winners, including the team’s three top scorers and four fifth-year seniors who have chosen their bonus year of eligibility.
  • South Carolina added six newcomers to its collection of recurring letter winners.
