Gil Reed Obituary (2021) – Salt Lake City, UT

Gil Paul Reed

1970 ~ 2021

Gil Paul Reed died of end-stage liver disease at the age of 50 at the City Creek Acute Care Center in Salt Lake City, just days before his 51st birthday.

Gil was born on October 24, 1970 in Provo, Utah, to his mother, Patricia Cox Reed and father, Fred Albert Reed. As a child, he had a special relationship with his grandparents, Leo and Rae Cox. As a result, Gil took an interest in nature, an interest that he had throughout his life hunting and fishing in Wasatch, Uinta, and the mountains of the Colorado Plateau. Mirror Lake in the Uintas was a special place for him. He attended Edgemont School in Provo and later Bingham High in South Jordan, Utah. He was then trained and worked as an electrical specialist.

He was an advocate of the underdog, and he often thought of the homeless and those passing through. As a boy he asked if he could give the homeless the turkey in the family refrigerator, and as an adult he invited the homeless to a Thanksgiving dinner at the family home. Family trips to Disneyland were important in his childhood, and as an adult, Gil paid to have people in need take him to “the happiest place on earth”. Gil loved animals and raised a large monitor lizard in his house. Gil also acquired a stake in Polynesia, particularly Samoa, and sometimes carried a Samoan lavalava around the house.

Gil was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a child and ordained an elder as an adult. In death he was preceded by his only sibling, his sister Anjenette Rose Reed, who was born to Gil on October 22, four years earlier. He leaves behind his mother Patricia Cox Tuckey and stepfather Ray Tuckey. The family would like to thank the Intermountain Health Care medical team and members of the Copper Hills 14th Ward in West Jordan for their compassionate service at the end of Gil’s life. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at West Jordan City Cemetery, 7925 South 1300 W, West Jordan, Utah.
