Hiker injured in search of $10,000 treasure in Salt Lake County

SALT LAKE CITY – A search for buried treasure resulted in an injured hiker and a call to Salt Lake County Search and Rescue Saturday night.

Officials report that a family of four was hiking to the Ferguson Canyon Lookout when a large rock fell on the foot of one of the hikers. His injury was so severe that he could not walk the walk alone from the lookout, and the Salt Lake County Search and Rescue was called for help.

Salt Lake County officials said they sent five teams of people, the equivalent of nearly 25 people, to lift the man down a steep canyon to the parking lot.

Several other groups of hikers were present along the trail, all searching for the same treasure, Salt Lake County officials said.

“Most were not prepared to be in the backcountry and asked our team for water on the way,” officials said in a statement.

The story behind the treasure

According to a report by KSL TV’s Alex Cabrero, the duo responsible for burying the treasure and promoting it afterward want to help people break free from division and negativity.

There’s a treasure chest of $ 10,000 in there somewhere in the Wasatch Mountains. It’s been there for almost a week now. Here’s our story for @ KSL5TV with the two men who hid it and why.

The two men buried $ 5,000 in 2020, initially thinking no one would be interested.

This treasure, Cabrero reported, was found in just a few days.

Message from Salt Lake County Search and Rescue

Since many of the people who hiked to the Ferguson Canyon lookout on Saturday night weren’t prepared to be in the backcountry, search and rescue officers have these memories:

  • Prepare yourself with the ten most important things (at least);
  • do not hike alone;
  • Let family and friends know where you are and when you are likely to return
