CEDAR CITY – The 13th annual Steve Hodson Cancer Classic basketball tournament drew 18 high school teams to Canyon View High School for three days this week.

On Wednesday evening, three girls ‘and three boys’ teams were still unbeaten in university action after losing 2-0 in the first two days. The undefeated girls ‘teams were Parowan, South Sevier and Westlake, while the 2-0 boys’ teams were Hurricane, Millard and Grantsville.

The popular invitational tournament, which ends Thursday, is held to commemorate Steve Hodson, a former basketball coach at Canyon View, Cedar High, and Southern Utah University, who died in 2008 after eight years battling cancer. With the proceeds from the sale of tickets and other donations, selected people with cancer and their families are financially supported.

This year, two recipients were selected as beneficiaries of the fundraising effort:

  • Cedar High graduate Gloria Truman has been battling breast cancer since January 2020. Gloria and her husband Jeremy have three children.
  • Bob Tate, the former parks and recreation director of Cedar City who also participated in the Utah Summer Games for many years, battled lung cancer for more than two years before discovering he also had a brain tumor in October 2021. He and his wife MaryAnn have six children and 17 grandchildren.

In addition to the 16 schools listed in the college plans below, two other schools participate at the subvarsity level: the girls’ teams from Dixie High and Lincoln County, Nevada.

One of the more exciting college games for girls on Tuesday was the hosting team Canyon View against the Ogden Tigers. Canyon View took an 8-2 lead early on, only to see the Tigers take a 23-2 run and take a 25-10 lead a minute before half-time.

As the final seconds of the second quarter passed, Ogden guard Mahine Bergeson dropped a 3-pointer to bring the Tigers to 28:14, but Canyon View’s Jaden Johnson took the inbound pass with less than two seconds to go and whizzed a shot from several feet behind the half-field line, which reduced Ogden’s lead to 11 points at halftime, 28-17.

Ogden then remained about 10 points ahead during the third period and took the lead at 38:28 at the end of the period. Canyon View did not begin to reduce its deficit until about halfway through the fourth quarter.

The Falcons eventually regained the lead when they took a basket of 44-43 in just over two minutes from time. The lead then changed hands a few more times, with Ogden taking the lead with 47:46 in less than a minute.

That set the stage for an inbound game that ended with Johnson hitting a baseline punch to give Canyon View a 48-47 lead with about 10 seconds remaining.

Ogden drove the ball into the field but mistreated a pass that went out and returned the ball to the Falcons, just over three seconds behind. Freshman Maylee Spencer then waved a pair of free throws to foil the game and give Canyon View a three-point win.

Johnson led Canyon View with 11 points while Harlee Nicoll and Spencer added nine points each.

Meanwhile, Bergeson led the Tigers with 14 points, 12 of which in the first half.
