OGDEN — Ogden High tried many times, four exactly, to give Ben Lomond a lifeline in the 70th Iron Horse Game on Wednesday night.

The Tigers threw one interception and fumbled three times, including a late fumble that gave the Scots the ball in a one-possession game on the Ogden side of the field with 3:10 left.

And still, the horse is orange and black. Ogden beat city rival Ben Lomond 21-14 on Wednesday night to win his sixth straight Iron Horse and his seventh straight game overall against the Scots. The Tigers are now 50-20 in regular-season Iron Horse games against Ben Lomond and 53-22 overall.

Senior quarterback Chino Furniss threw three touchdown passes: two to Adam Wilson and one to Max Trujillo. Those three scores held up against the four turnovers and Ben Lomond’s many chances it had of winning his first Iron Horse since 2016.

If there was an individual standout in the game, Wilson was one. Head coach Erik Thompson called Wilson an “unsung hero” on the team along with lineman/linebacker Braxten Shobe.

“He’s a baller,” Furniss said of Wilson. “He’s not my go-to guy, but he stepped up big for us and made big plays. They weren’t touchdown plays, but he made moves and was able to be electric for us tonight.”

Wilson caught two touchdown passes of 43 and 55 yards late in the second quarter to give Ogden (3-6, 2-3 3A North) a 14-7 halftime lead.

Wilson also kicked extra points and kickoffs, and covered at defensive back against a Scots’ team with a deep receiving group that threw the ball more often than not.

“I love it. Great atmosphere, student section was so loud, it was awesome,” Wilson said.

Ben Lomond (3-7, 0-5) controlled affairs for about the first 20 minutes in front of an energized crowd that officially numbered 2,073 paid fans, and at least a couple hundred more students who get free admission.

Jake East recovered a Chet Colvin fumble on the Tigers’ first drive and Ben Lomond turned it into a 10-yard pass touchdown from Manase Tuatagaloa to Hunter Christensen.

The previous play, Wilson appeared to have intercepted Tuatagaloa in the end zone, but a roughing the passer penalty on Ogden instead moved the ball to the 10-yard line for the Scots.

Ben Lomond’s Luke Warten intercepted Furniss’ screen pass in the red zone to end another successful Ogden drive. The Tigers’ defense forced a three-and-out and the offense finally came alive.

“I was super proud of the offensive line,” Ogden coach Erik Thompson said. “Ben Lomond was putting eight in the box, putting pressure every down, playing cover zero and for us to still run the ball into that as successfully as we did really to me was the most important thing that happened in that game.”

Furniss threw the touchdowns to Wilson on successive drives in a span of 2:53 to end the first half, both of which were set up by a heavy dose of the Colvin and Max Trujillo running game.

The second TD pass saw Wilson evade two defenders and run the last 40 yards on his own, scoring with 26 seconds left in the half.

“I ran a turnout and go (for the first TD), just noticed that the corner was scared, so coach put me on him one-v-one, burnt him for the touchdown,” Wilson said. “Second one, Chino got the ball to me which was impressive because he was hit on the throw, then I did some work to get to the end zone. That play in practice always goes big, that play’s designed to go big.”

When Ogden increased his lead in the third quarter, Furniss lobbed a screen pass to Trujillo for a 24-yard, catch-and-run touchdown and a 21-7 edge.

Earlier in the drive, Colvin ran for 11 yards out of the Wildcat formation to convert fourth-and-3, which was the fourth time in the game he’d converted a fourth down out of an unconventional spot (three from the Wildcat, one on a fake point).

As Ogden’s offense flourished, his defense adjusted as well. After the Scots scored on their first drive of the game, they didn’t get a first down on offense until early in the second half, and that drive ended in a punt after just the one first down.

But another fumble recovery galvanized Ben Lomond. Eight players later, freshman running back Jerome Nash ran for a 1-yard score to cut the Ogden lead to 21-14 with 9:40 left.

The Tigers ran the ball, converted first downs and ran the clock afterwards. Then they fumbled again, this one recovered by Aunese Tuatagaloa.

It gave the Scots a chance with 3:10 left. Manase Tuatagaloa’s deep fourth-and-12 went off Davian Muñoz’s hands, then Hunter Christensen’s hands and then hit the turf.

“Just a real gritty team win, not very pretty … really that’s what this game’s about. You get in these games, you have the emotions of kids playing hard, sometimes they make mistakes and also rise up,” Thompson said.

BL had two timeouts left as Ogden took over with 1:54 left. The Tigers had a third-and-14, which Max Trujillo converted with a 30-yard run to kick off the celebrations.

Both teams were in line for a first-round road playoff game before Wednesday’s game as Ben Lomond was at No. 9 and Ogden No. 10 in the 3A RPI standings.

Both teams will still likely hit the road next Friday for the first round of the 3A playoffs, though if Manti loses to Juab on Thursday night (Manti was at No. 8 in the RPI), a chance exists of Ogden flip-flopping with the Templars and getting a home game as the no. 8 seeds.
