Jason Thomas’ 2021 Salt Lake City 2 Preview – Supercross

After 16 laps we are ready to finish this 2021 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. It was also a unique season of residences, speedway venues, COVID-19 testing, and drama on the racetrack. As usual, most of the members of this traveling circus are ready to switch gear to the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship by this time of year. Overall, however, the Feld Entertainment crew deserves applause for having completed another season in the midst of global uncertainty. The protocols that states, counties and venues enforce are downright nerve-wracking, and yet we are at a high level here. Great job for everyone involved.

The final track is a no-nonsense layout. Long rhythms, two short whoops sections and the usual 180s. The start of this week is very long, which really highlights who has selected their engine package and who is suffering from the altitude. Make sure the Monster Energy / Star Yamaha shine in the 250cc class (shocking) and the factory Hondas and KTMs shine in the 450s.

The first corner is a long left 180 and immediately leads into a long rhythm section. If one of the elite riders could grab a holeshot and use the larger rhythm section options on the first lap, they could win a nice gap. The quickest way to get through this section is undoubtedly three times as much. Once this triple is achieved, the 450s have two options. You can either triple on a tabletop or triple over the tabletop (will be hard). When they triple they get out and then from table to table and into the corner. However, if they come over that tabletop, they could head to the corner for another quad. It will be difficult to get this line right, but if you can it would save you at least 0.5 seconds per lap.
