Joan Glissmeyer Obituary (1939 – 2021) – Salt Lake City, UT

Joan Liebelt Glissmeyer

1939 ~ 2021

Joan Liebelt Glissmeyer, 81 years old, died on September 25, 2021 in Murray, Utah. She was born on October 1, 1939 in Salt Lake City to Gus and Blanche Liebelt.

Joan grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her siblings were Carol, Bruce and Francine (Liebelt). She graduated from Bountiful High School, where she was Harvest Queen, singing in a girls quartet. She also worked with her mother during high school and was very reliable and had a strong work ethic. She later married Garry Glissmeyer and had two sons, Deric and Devan. She took Garry through school and supported the family for several years by waiting for tables. They lived in numerous cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, and Kansas City. She was a loving and protective mother who taught her sons many things, but most importantly, kindness, love, humor (and sarcasm), bowling, and tennis. She loved tennis and was an excellent player who spent many hours playing in tennis leagues and teaching her boys how to play. She later married Lynn Sheffield and they started a kitchen remodeling company which she ran in Murray, Utah. They retired and moved briefly to St. George and then back to Draper, where she has lived for the past 13 years. She loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She especially loved the trips, play dates and family events with Amaree, Zuree, Ellee, King and Lucy.

Joan was an avid reader and often read several books a week, so she was always in the library, swapping books with friends. She enjoyed sharing meals and time with her sons and participating in grandchildren’s activities such as sports, music, and dance events. She loved animals and had a special place in her heart for her kitten, which is what survives to her. Joan had a great sense of humor that was enjoyed by many. She enjoyed the worship service and temple work. She was there for us with calm but constant support.

Joan leaves behind her sons Deric and Devan Glissmeyer, their families and her sister Francine Hoffman and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gus and Blanche Liebelt, her sister Carol Poston, her brother Bruce Liebelt and her husband Lynn Sheffield.
