Kids help thwart a fire in their neighbor’s Salt Lake City garage

SALT LAKE CITY – The decision made by a group of boys in a narrow neighborhood of Salt Lake City on Friday night could have been a lifesaver.

And it was a pretty common choice – to play outside instead of inside.

In an exclusive report, KSL television reporter Garna Mejia spoke to the children who first discovered the fire at 2135 South Oneida Street, Salt Lake City.

“I just remember smoking, like smoke and fire, and like ‘who is barbecuing?'” One kid said to Mejia.

Fire was in a detached garage. Many thanks to the neighbor who alerted the family in the house and activated 911. With their immediate action, we were able to limit the fire and protect the residents. SLC your support made our aggressive attack possible while we fought a second alarm fire elsewhere. What the child saw was a burning car in his neighbor’s garage. He said he ran in and told an older child to call 911.

And then some of the other kids ran to tell their parents. An adult grabbed a fire extinguisher and thought it might help.

“But he immediately runs back when he hears a boom,” one child said to Mejia.

Firefighters came and put out the flames.

And the neighbor whose garage was on fire? He is grateful. “You certainly saved us the day,” said Steve Neiderhauser.

Hear from the children themselves in Garna Mejia’s account above.
