Lyle J Martinsen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, died of natural causes on Sunday, October 10th, 2021. He was born on December 10, 1927 in Vernal Utah to George Henry Martinsen and Sarah Mariah Hatch. He married Lora D Stewart on February 12, 1952, and they were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple.
Lyle served in the US Navy at the end of World War II. He served as a talented machinist in Guam and Pearl Harbor and was employed in large ship engine rooms. His love for God and the country was deep, as he could often be seen stopped and the flag saluted.
Lyle grew up in a large family in Vernal, Utah. He was the 9th of 10 children. After high school, he worked in the oil field and later joined the US Navy; After serving honorably, Lyle and his brother Dal bought and operated a sawmill near Vernal, Utah. He later worked for the United States Government at the Bureau of Reclamation. He tested many dam sites, including the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. He later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to work for the Boyles Brothers Drilling Company. There he designed, constructed and revolutionized the core drilling systems for mining that are still used worldwide today. His technical talent has resulted in 21 patents including the Softalk phone shoulder rest product.
Lyle lived in Murray, Utah for 62 years with his wife, Lora D Stewart Martinsen, and 5 children he loved. He found great joy in his children and grandchildren and often said: “Family is everything”. Lyle had a strong testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ that was his livelihood. He served in multiple church callings for many years, serving twice as a bishop in the same ward and in a stake presidency, and later as the stake president of the Murray Utah South Stake.
Lyle is killed by his son Dan, his granddaughter Lacy, his grandson Justin Elliot (Big Justin), his grandson-in-law Eric Wiseman, his nine siblings and his parents. He leaves behind his wife Lora D, his children: Stewart (Debbie), Dan’s wife (Sandra), Lynette (Tom), Lane (Tara), LaDawn (Mathew), his 22 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren whom he adored.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Belview Ward Chapel, 6300 South 300 East, Murray, Utah. The Belview Ward Chapel will be viewed on Friday, October 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. before the services (same address – 6300 South 300 East, Murray , Utah). Internment Murray City Cemetery.
